Summer in the Southern Lakes

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Summer well and truly arrived in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes districts last week with the mercury climbing to well above 25 degrees most days providing perfect weather conditions for sightseeing and our popular glacier landing trips. Wanaka has been abuzz since the start of the summer holiday period with the annual influx of holidaymakers arriving to enjoy long, hot days in the resort.

Following the busy Christmas and New Year periods, visitors continued to stream into town for holidays and the increasingly popular annual Challenge Wanaka Festival which includes an iron-distance, half iron distance and short course triathlon. Huge congratulations to the 2000 odd athletes who participated. We flew one of the competitors after the competition. Take a look: http://bit.ly/youtube_chrismccormack

The Aspiring Helicopters crew has also been kept busy with sightseeing flights, glacier landings and the launch of our new website.

It was also great to see television series High Country Rescue, which we did a lot of filming for in 2010, air on New Zealand screens this summer. The eight part series documented high-country rescues by the New Zealand Police and Search and Rescue teams. Assisting the Police and LandSAR crews in their searches of some pretty hazardous terrain is one the most rewarding aspects of our flying service and it was great to be able to share some of what we experience with viewers. If you managed to see an episode or two, we hope you enjoyed it.
