This is one of our favourite times of the year… the last of the heli-skiing wraps up this month and spring is in the air. The grass is greening up and baby lambs are appearing in the paddocks. The days are getting longer and warmer and with snow still on the peaks this is by far one of our visually “prettiest” seasons in Wanaka.
That makes it an ideal time for a heli-wedding photo shoot with us!

Skiing “Spring Corn” on the Mountains. The powder hounds have disappeared but the skiing is just getting really good. Spring Corn is affectionally known as ‘hero snow’… everyone can ski it and you feel like a hero on every run! Heli-skiing is a great option in September with the warmer temps and ‘hero snow’ combined with epic lunch spots to work on your snow tan. ** This season has been a bit of an exception to the rule with more powder days in September than the rest of the winter!?!**
Locals swap their skis for bikes. Join them and hire a bike, pack a picnic lunch and take the stunning “Millenium” scenic ride from the lake front around to Glendhu Motor Camp. Alternatively ride out along the Hawea River track and stop at the Hawea Hotel for hot chips and a beer in their Beer Garden with gorgeous views over Lake Hawea. If you’re into mountain biking hit the trails at “Bike Glendhu” for some epic downhill.
Outdoor dining is back in – head to one of the Lakefront restaurants for apres or grab a takeaway from one of the local food trucks on Brownston Street and have a picnic on the lakefront. Keep an eye out for our local “Grebes” (New Zealand’s famous ‘Bird of the Year’ in 2023) that make our lake their home.
Meet the new locals. There’s lots of baby animals about at this time of year, spot the lambs, calves and ‘bambies’ on your drive out to our hangar.
It’s still chilly for most but for some it’s time to take that first refreshing dip into the lake, wash off the winter cobwebs and feel invigorated!
