Come with us and enjoy one of the top day walks in New Zealand on this engaging day trip. The Rob Roy Glacier track is highly rated for its location, easy access and spectacular views.
Your day starts with your guide picking you up from Wanaka and taking you on the stunning scenic through the mighty Matukituki Valley with rolling green farmland, mountain peaks crowding the horizon and a classic braided river. You’ll arrive at entrance to Mt Aspiring National Park (Raspberry Flat carpark) Note: there are toilet facilities available here and you’ll kit up for your hike.
The track itself winds its way steadily up through native forest with a variety of Beech trees, ferns and palms. If you are lucky you’ll spot an inquisitive South Island Robin or hear the call of a Bell Bird. At one point you’ll walk next to the Rob Roy steam with its beautiful aqua blue colour, created from the glacier melt. You’ll catch glimpses of the glacier on your assent but it’s once you reach the amphitheatre that the true magnitude of Rob Roy can be experienced. There are a myriad of waterfalls coming down the sheer cliff face and the ‘hanging’ nature of the glacier means you can clearly see the blue ice and crevasses it boasts. During the peak of summer you might see or hear a small avalanche – both chilling and thrilling!
We’ll stop and enjoy a picnic lunch here so you can take it all in and soak up the ambience. Keep an eye out for our cheeky Kea (New Zealand’s Alpine Parrot). They are fun and inquisitive but also keen to steel your lunch if given the opportunity.
Back to the road end at Rasperry Flat and our helicopter will meet you to whisk you up to land on one of our local glaciers. You’ll be treated to an exceptional birds eye view of the vastness of the Southern Alps, with Mt Aspiring towering at the centre. We’ll have 10minutes on the glacier for you to get out and breath the mountain air and take as many photos as your heart desires.
From the mountain to to our hangar where your guide will meet you to return you to Wanaka.
